So, for several thousand of you (around 40,000 or more), you will have just left Burning Man. Im not saying your all reading this blog, but thats neither here nor there is it? But still, what is it to be a Burning Man?

Does it take setting yourself on fire? Because i know for a fact that i wouldnt find it much fun. Nor would it be as spectacular as the ending of Burning Man 2009 (have watched the live webcast of the burn. Impressive!) But really, what does it take? Well, after much thought (ok, not much thought..) and a lot of time, I think i may have come up with an answer. Possibly not a good answer, maybe not even a correct answer, but an answer. And that answer is….

Ok lets not jump the gun here. I mean, theres obviously a lot of things going into being something spectacular. In the case of the Man, that is a lot of time, wood, fireworks, and manpower. So its obviously not going to be easy. Nor is it going to be cheap. Well, it might be cheap, but it certainly isnt going to be free. The Man is made up of many seperate parts, not just the arms, legs, torso and head, but of individual nails, pieces of wood, glue, cells in the wood, etc.. And this all goes together to create this single monument, something that everyone can unite under, and that everyone can relate to. So, as has been seen, it takes a lot of work. But what kind of work?

Well, for a start, the work must be fun, and interesting. Otherwise, why the hell would people do it? Why would they invest their time and money into building something and then burning it, if they werent interested in it? If they did it just ‘because they were told to’? That is a large problem i see at the moment, there is a lot of people around who just take orders, and never go on to do something else. Never take an initiative. And there are people who’s job it is to make sure people dont use their initiative. I will quite confidentaly assume that there are no such people in Burning Man, and so there should be no such thoughts in yourself. Nothing that says you shouldnt go and do that, even if it doesnt work or blows up in your face – learning the hard way is normally the way its done anyway. And this leads us onto the answer…

The answer is: Do what you want. But dont sit around and wait for the oppertunity to come to you, just go out and DO IT. You want to get fit? Go out on your bike. You want to build things? Go out and build them! You want to learn a trade, language, skill, something? Go and do it! This ritual of going to the desert and burning a Man has been around for over 20 years, and is showing no sign of slowing. Started out as just a few people on a beach, and ending up as over 40,000 people in a desert having fun and doing what they want to do, this is the perfect example of how everyone should live, and how everyone should lead their lives. So get out there, and become a Burning Man. That includes you, all you Women. Just because it is called a ‘Man’ doesnt stop you!

-and so it is

Well, I am now back at home for the foreseeable future. And unfortunately, that about sums up my current situation. Having failed another year at Uni, I can’t stay there, so I’m currently looking for work, and in the current economic climate, and with the job prospects as they are, that is turning out to be a really damned hard. Also, living at home has certain… dissadvantages. Freedom for example. And not very much room to stretch out. Oh, and my friends from Hull. but that sort of comes with the territory of moving back home.

So… What have i been up to then? Well, mostly i’ve been playing games. Atleast, in my free time anyway. Also been searching for jobs. Unsuccessfully (see above). And generally avoiding…. (At this point i looked at the TV and cant remember what i was writing. damn.) Oh, and i’ve also been reading lots of RSS feeds, and blogs.

One of the blogs i’ve read recently is Seniath’s, which included several posts that made me think. Thinking about the general idea of going through all your school stuff, then coming out of it, getting a job, settling down, and earning lots of money. Well, i got the first two bits. And now, im working on the other bits. Am wanting to go into computing actually, and am learning C#, and will be eventually moving on to C++ (and Java, Basic, etc. and so forth…). Anyone have any hints, tips, books, websites or stuff that would help actually? Please leave a comment! And also any knowledge that you would deem necessary.

Anyway, am now off to do something else.

-and so it is.

Well then, here it is. A new idea for this blog, commenting on stuff that is happening on the internet. This will be quite a difference for me, as I haven’t done all that much in the way of blogging, apart from maybe the old live journal i used to have, and the like. However this is hopefully going to be something different now, egged on by all the blogs that i read regularly.

So what has been going on in this little head of mine? Well, after reading blog post after blog post (yes i know two of them was a whole blog.. its all good!) on increased productivity, and on sorting things out in your life by just getting on and doing them, I decided to do it. And one of the things i decided to do was use my website more! So here we go…

Online productivity

In this large area of internet, there are many new technologies that allow you to work on everything online. Examples of these include Google Docs, and the new Apple iWork.com which allow collaboration on document editing. The main idea behind all these online programs are that you can then access your work from anywhere with an internet connection, which now is almost everywhere. Microsoft is also jumping in, with online versions of their popular office programs.

There are problems with these systems however. For normal, everyday work files for people who use the occasional word processed document or spreadsheet, there is not much point in using these unless you’re moving from place to place a lot, and won’t have access to your own computer, such as a student with a desktop working on files in University. But there is also the cost to take into account. If you use lots of files, then the storage space starts to come into account. now with Google Docs I cant seem to find the storage space allowed, however I think it will be in the region of 2Gb. This can be upgraded, for a cost. This is also true for most other services like Google Docs, although at the moment iWork.com is in free beta. But when iWork.com comes into full use, then this will be changed to a subscription based service, much like the other Apple internet services.

This is only a brief look into the online services for word processing, as there are many other services I have probably overlooked, or not even heard of. However, comments will be appreciated on this subject (as long as they are productive). Also, comments on what people thought if this, my first foray into mainstream blogging!

-and so it is

Well recently I have been reading a load of stuff. Oh by the way, hello to all of you out there! sorry that its been several months since I last updated. Anyway.. As I said I’ve been reading a lot of stuff on the internet, namely blogs. And some of them have got me thinking that i could write about some of the stuff they bring up. So starting with the next post (Yea its going to take me a while to actually write something substantial…) I am going to try and make regular qualitative updates with stuff that I have been interested in.

In the mean time… go read Least I Could Do. From the beginning. It will only take you… 12 hours or so. :D

Hello again avid readers! Its time for another update on the happenings of me. Well currently, sat at home in Haslington, and its raining heavily outside. Or at least it was… either way, its really wet outside, and so nothing to do out there. Sometime this week I will be heading back to Hull, to finish sorting things out for next year, as well as have another search for a job.

So anyway, what have I been up to… well, I’ve had a week in Wales on holiday, where I got slightly sun burnt… and also spent a week here at home, including a 20th birthday party for a couple of my friends back here. But apart from that, I do miss the freedom of being in Hull, where i can go out whenever and pretty much always have something to do. Oh well. Shall be back there soon enough.

In other news, I’m running out of games to play. Well that’s a lie… I’m running out of games i can pick up and put down quickly. Especially with the computers i have… not really that fast. Still, I shall persevere and find stuff to do. Might actually get some Electronics done in my spare time… When i decide on something to do. I should really start small, but i don’t know what to make. Might do some development on a ‘development’ board I’ve been thinking of for a while, something modular to teach you how to program PIC and Atmega Microprocessors. Actually, i think I’ll do just that.

-and so it is

Name the quote! Come on Howie. Anyway… erm at the moment I am packing to go home! Yes, that wonderful place on the other side of the country. Actually, im going home so i can go on holiday, seeing as i dont have a job yet. So next week, there will be no updates. Not that there are many at the moment, but oh well. That MAY change. Seeing as i’ve got a few days to kill.. and a Funeral to go to. So i will be leaving with my Laptop (so no big gaming :( I know… a fortnight without TF2, however will i cope!) from Sunny Hull, to Crewe… home of the trains. Currently copying files i’l want with me when i go home… OOH! *notes down bookmarks to copy* Yea. So by about 2, maybe 3 if the trains are late.. I’l be home, with Tigger the cat. Oh and the family. Anyway.

So in recent news (Yes i bought a newspaper today! AND read it! be proud!) there have been some rather unusual happenings. The drownings of those 2 girls in Italy, for example… and the rather blasé attitude that the people around it had, whether they be tourists or locals. (It never really made that clear anyway…). And also, the joy for men with Prostate Cancer, with this new drug that may cure, or atleast slow down the cancer. So good for them! Also, some interesting stuff about chinese diet.. which i need to finish reading. Might write up a blog while on the train tomorrow. Anyway… I dont think there was much more i wanted to comment on…

-and so it is

Well, it’s been a long time coming, a re-hash of my blog. It also gave me a good excuse to install the new Wordpress update, considering i was running on an old version. So here we are! Some things of note at the moment, the header image is of my new moleskine. Taken from the image to the right. As you can see im still getting used to the new Wordpress update, aswell as a new plugin for Flickr. The plugin will let me post pictures from my Flickr account, so i dont have to use all the space on my server! Helpful.

In other news, im currently searching for a job – and getting nowhere fast. So if anyone wants to give a student a job, please drop me an e-mail. Please, only if the job is in Hull though, can’t really go very far as i cant drive.

Will soon be heading home though, as i have a Funeral to go to for the oldest member of the Bloor clan. Aunty Freda was i think 93, and has seen several generations of Bloors arrive, obviously including me. I shall miss the big gatherings for her birthday, where I actually meet most of my cousins and other relatives. My extended family is quite extensive heh.

And now i have ran out of ideas to talk about. So i will leave you with a few links:

Rock Paper Shotgun – A good blog about PC games – read and enjoy!

Looking For Group – A comic that EVERYONE should read. If only for Richard.

And also, a few words of advice: The cows are out to get you.

-and so it is
